Chapter Twenty

Disoriented after seeing Xave in the costume trailer, Angie made her way to the craft services table. Maybe she should eat something for energy. On her way she encountered several crew members and a couple of the pirate actors. All of them noticed her new mermaid costume and smiled. Several complimented her on the new look.

By the time she reached the food she was a little overwhelmed by all of the extra attention. She hadn’t realized that taking a larger role in the movie would make her so seen by everyone else. Add that to the general loopy sensation in her head from being near Xave, and she began to wonder if she had made the right decision.

Standing in front of a large fruit tray, Angie grabbed a small paper plate and started loading it with bite size chunks of pineapple, honeydew melon, and strawberries when she felt someone touch her elbow. Startled, she turned quickly to find Sofia standing behind her.

“Hey! How’s your first day as Queen of the Mermaids?” Sofia asked, beaming. When she looked deep into Angie’s eyes her smile faded. “What’s the matter?”

Angie lifted one shoulder and let it fall, trying to give Sofia a brave smile. “It’s good so far.”

Sofia’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t believe you.”

Angie bit her bottom lip then remembered her makeup and stopped. “Nothing’s the matter. How was your trip?”

Sofia flicked her eyes to Angie’s plate and muttered something in Spanish. Then in English, she asked, “Is that all you’re eating? Fruit?”

“I had oatmeal this morning,” Angie responded, hating that Sofia felt the need to treat her like a child, yet still not feeling totally whole and strong.

“Will you eat some eggs at least? Something with protein?”

Angie nodded, though she doubted that would help her predicament. She was pretty sure the antidote had lost its potency when she drank it, which meant she was in for a long day of fighting off dizziness and, as Sofia had so aptly called, gooey eyes.

“I’ll eat some eggs, yes,” she agreed.

Sofia motioned to a nearby table. “Sit down and rest. I’ll bring it to you.” When Sofia joined her she held a plate heaped with not only fruit, but an egg and potato breakfast burrito, tortilla ships with seven layer dip, and a chocolate walnut brownie.

“I can’t eat all of that,” Angie argued.

Sofia placed the food squarely in front of her. “Do me a favor and try.”

Angie did as she was told and took a bite of the burrito, made just spicy enough by the addition of green chili mixed with the egg and potato.

Sofia watched her chew. “Bridget said you went back to the apothecary and got some kind of cure.” She annunciated apothecary slowly as if it was a fake word.

Angie nodded, still chewing the last of her bite. “We did and they gave me an antidote, but I don’t think it worked.”

Sofia leveled her gaze at Angie and relayed her displeasure without saying a word. Angie ignored her negative vibe and
